Jamie’s Mission with the Pittsburgh Emperors Jamie is a 9-year-old Level C player who has been skating with the Pittsburgh Emperors for the past two seasons. For Jamie, being part of the Emperors is about much more than learning hockey — it’s about friendship, confidence, independence, and the pure joy of being a kid on the ice. Hockey gives Jamie the opportunity to make friends, learn new skills, experience the excitement of scoring a goal, and build confidence — all while having fun in a supportive, judgment-free environment. Jamie on the Ice One of the things Jamie loves most about hockey is the freedom he feels on the ice. Skating gives him a sense of independence and possibility that carries over into every part of his life. As a teammate, Jamie is endlessly curious. He loves figuring out how things work, often trying to reverse-engineer solutions in his head. He shines in math, science, and music, and he’s always eager to share the fun with those around him. His enthusiasm and curiosity bring a special energy to the team. A Journey of Growth and Determination Jamie’s progress on the ice has been remarkable. He began his hockey journey taking his first steps on the ice with the support of a walker. Over time, through patience and determination, Jamie learned to skate completely on his own. He also worked hard to master the fundamentals — going from struggling to hit the puck with his stick to being able to connect with the puck and score a goal. Every milestone, big or small, has been a moment of pride and celebration. More Than Hockey Jamie was born prematurely, which has resulted in disabilities and multiple diagnoses that affect what he is able to do. These challenges have been part of his life from the very beginning. Being welcomed onto the Pittsburgh Emperors team has given Jamie something incredibly meaningful — the chance to simply be a kid, without judgment or limitations placed on him. Seeing the smile on his face when he’s on the ice is something his family is deeply grateful for. Why the Pittsburgh Emperors Matter to Our Family The Pittsburgh Emperors play a vital role in our family’s life. By helping provide hockey equipment for families who may struggle with the high cost of adaptive gear, the organization allows parents to focus on meeting their child’s essential medical needs while still giving them the opportunity to participate in a sport they love. The Emperors make hockey accessible, inclusive, and possible.
